On Friday, April 21, 2023, the Yale Center for British Art is holding an online symposium about Isokon Ltd, the 1930s design company that commissioned one of the Britain’s first modernist buildings, known also as the Lawn Road Flats, designed by Wells Coates.
This one-day, online symposium will explore all aspects of Isokon Ltd. design output in the 1930s, including an iconic range of plywood furniture by designers Marcel Breuer and Walter Gropius, and its place within the creative and intellectual milieu operating in London between the World Wars. The symposium aims to assess the state of scholarship on this topic, ahead of preparations for the first major US exhibition about Isokon, which is projected to take place at the YCBA in 2026/7. We are eager to attract a wide range of speakers interested in this topic. The free online symposium will be open to the public via a Zoom webinar, and made available on our website at a later date.
