The Historic Hawai'i Foundation awarded its 9th Annual Frank Haines Preservation award to Dr. Don Hibbard on Friday, May 19, 2017.  Dr. Hibbard has been involved in the preservation of Hawaii’s historic sites since moving permanently to Hawaii in the late 1970s. He served as administrator of the Hawaii State Historic Preservation Division for 24 years.  As a founding member of Docomomo U.S., Hawaii Chapter five years ago, Dr. Hibbard was instrumental in efforts to establish the Chapter as a non-profit entity. He continues to actively volunteer with the Hawaii Chapter of Docomomo as the lead of its Programs Committee.

Dr. Hibbard has authored several books on Hawaii’s architectural history, and is heavily involved with architectural inventory surveys, the nomination of properties to the National Register of Historic Places, and preparation of reports for Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) and Historic American Engineering Record (HAER). Dr. Hibbard holds a Ph.D. in American Studies from the University of Hawaii, and meets the Secretary of Interior’s Professional Qualification Standards as an Architectural Historian.

Established in 2009, and named for master architect Frank Haines, FAIA, the award is presented to individuals who have demonstrated sustained and outstanding achievements in the areas of preserving the significant historic and cultural places of Hawaii.

Dr. Hibbard has been an SAH member since 2004, and became a Life Member in 2016.  He was the editor and contributing author of the SAH BUS volume  Buildings of Hawai'i., published in 2011.
