Macarena de la Vega de León, University of Melbourne, and
Brett Tippey, Kent State University, co-chairs of the SAH 2020 Virtual Conference session "Opposite/Apposite: Exchanges between Australasia and Ibero-America," are pleased to announce that papers from the session have been developed and published in a special issue of
Fabrications: The Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians, Australia and New Zealand.
"Thanks to the fruitful discussion that followed the conference session and the cross-pollination of ideas and information between the authors, the articles have been expanded and enriched, forming a robust collection of interconnected narratives," De la Vega de León and Tippey say in their introduction to the issue.
The issue contains four papers original from the SAHANZ session:
"Travelling Abroad to Understand Australia: Glenn Murcutt’s Look at the Architecture of José Antonio Coderch" by Emma López-Bahut
"Learning from the Opposite? Iberian Journals Glance at Australia" by Ana Esteban-Maluenda and Rute Figueiredo
"New World: Harry Seidler, Brazil and the Australian City" by Philip Goad
"Layered Landscapes: Links between Brazil and Australia after the Second World War" by Andrew Saniga
Also included in a paper that would have been published in an open issue of the journal:
"Melbourne’s Federation Square and its Heritage Discontents, 1994–2002" by James Lesh
Macarena de la Vega de Leon joined SAH in 2018. She received a Gill Family Foundation Graduate Student Fellowship in 2019 and a 2020 SAH Opler Grant for Membership for Emerging Professionals. She participated in the SAH GAHTC Teacher to Teacher Workshop, served as a speaker at the 2019 SAH International Conference, and served as a session chair at the 2020 SAH Virtual Conference.
Brett Tippey joined SAH in 2010. He received an SAH Membership Grant for Emerging Professionals in 2014 and served as a session chair at the 2016 SAH Annual International Conference and the 2020 SAH Virtual Conference. He is a member of the SAH Architectural Studies Affiliate Group, and has served on the de Montequin Fellowship Committee.
Emma López-Bahut joined SAH in 2019. She was a speaker at the SAH 2020 Virtual Conference, and currently participates in the Women in Architecture Affiliate Group. She received an SAH Annual Conference Senior Scholar Fellowship in 2020.
Ana Estaban-Maluenda became a member of SAH in 2015 and was awarded SAH Annual Conference Senior Scholar Fellowships in 2018 and 2020. She served as a session chair at the SAH 2016 Annual International Conference and as a speaker at the SAH 2018 Annual International Conference and the SAH 2020 Virtual Conference.
Philip Goad initially joined SAH in 1995. He was a speaker at the SAH 2015 and 2016 Annual International Conferences and served as a session chair at the SAH 2019 International Conference.
