We are delighted to announce the selection of fellows in our three areas of study: Byzantine, Garden and Landscape, and Pre-Columbian Studies, as well as the Mellon Initiative in Urban Landscape Studies. This summer, fifteen fellows join us to research topics including lost and forgotten Byzantine manuscripts, an archaeological study of a Black cemetery in Georgetown, and Mesoamerican religion and Latinx spirituality.

During the 2022–2023 academic year, we are delighted host over forty fellows who will be studying questions such as how the Buitenzorg Botanic Garden was engaged in empire-building in the Netherlands East Indies, what we are learning from the excavations of Kaminaljuyu, and how an ancient Greco-Roman theater performed in medieval Byzantine visual culture. Additionally, our Mellon Fellows study urban landscapes through lenses of democracy, race, identity, and difference.
