JSAH Receives Grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation

SAH has received a second grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to develop JSAH Online.  In 2006 SAH received a planning grant from Mellon to develop a new type of online journal that would enable the simultaneous viewing of both scholarly text and dynamic images.  In December 2008, SAH received an implementation grant that will enable the Society to work with its new publishing partner, University of California Press, to develop a user interface that will accommodate the complex illustration program for the online version of JSAH. 

The effort to produce both print and online versions of JSAH has been spearheaded by Hilary Ballon who acted as Editor of JSAH from 2005-2008.  Ballon, who collaborated with scholars, computer programmers, and user interface specialists at ARTstor to develop the full potential of JSAH Online, will continue to guide its design until the first issue is released in March 2010.  In addition to presenting the same articles that will be published in the print edition of JSAH, the online version will be able to accommodate complex visuals including film and video clips, 3D computer models, sound, zoomable images, and GIS map integration.  Current JSAH Editor David Brownlee, who will select the articles that will appear in the March 2010 issue of JSAH, which will be the inaugural edition of JSAH Online, is seeking authors who will take full advantage of the capabilities offered by the online presentation of their scholarship.
