When SAH met in Cincinnati, Ohio, for our annual conference in 2008, one of the highlights was a visit to Columbus, Indiana. Not everyone was able to participate due to the limited number of people we could accommodate, so we wanted to give you another opportunity to visit Columbus and experience its collection of important mid-twentieth-century architecture.

In 1991, the American Institute of Architects (AIA) ranked Columbus the sixth most architecturally important city in the U.S. Join us and learn how this thriving Midwestern town became the architectural mecca that it is.

Tour sites will include the recently restored Irwin Union Bank by Eero Saarinen and Miller House and Garden, which combines the design genius of Eero Saarinen, Dan Kiley, and Alexander Girard. Also included are works by world-renowned architects I. M. Pei, Eliel Saarinen, Gunnar Birkerts, Myron Goldsmith, Edward Bassett, Ralph Johnson, Kevin Roche, and Fred Koetter, as well as landscape designs by Dan Kiley, Jack Curtis, and Michael Van Valkenburgh.

Tour leader Henry Kuehn has been studying and leading tours of Columbus, Indiana, for many years. Architectural history has been a keen interest of his ever since taking Vince Scully’s course as an undergraduate at Yale. Kuehn is a past president of the Graham Foundation for the Advancement of the Fine Arts and is on the Architecture and Design Committee of the Art Institute of Chicago. He serves as a director of Goettsch Partners, a Chicago-based architectural firm. Kuehn is also a docent with the Columbus Visitors Center. He has lectured frequently on a wide variety of architectural topics and is currently working on a book with Carter Manny, an SAH Fellow, on the burial sites of the country’s important architects. Kuehn has a long history of involvement with SAH, having served for many years as director and treasurer, and he continues his work on various SAH committees.
