  Amber N. Wiley Awarded the H. Allen Brooks Travelling Fellowship
Amber N. Wiley, visiting professor at Tulane School of Architecture, has been selected as the inaugural recipient of the H. Allen Brooks Travelling Fellowship from the Society of Architectural Historians (SAH). The prestigious fellowship awards $50,000 to a recent graduate or emerging scholar for one year of travel to experience architecture and landscapes firsthand. Read More.
     

  Buildings of Texas Wins Preservation Texas' Media Award 
Gerald Moorhead’s Buildings of Texas: Central, South and Gulf Coast has won Preservation Texas’ 2013 Texas Media Award for its comprehensive and expert scholarship on Texas’ architectural heritage from pre-statehood days to the present. The book is part of the Buildings of the United States series from the Society of Architectural Historians (SAH), a state-by-state documentation of important buildings across the U.S., written by leading local and national scholars.     Registration for 2014 SAH Study Programs Opens December 17
SAH will open registration for the Miami Study Day and will be taking reservations for the Croatia Study Tour on Tuesday, December 17, at 3 p.m. CST. The study day is a great opportunity to get away from the winter-like weather and enjoy a program in Miami led by David Rifkind, professor of architecture at Florida International University. For the first time ever, SAH is offering a cruise tour, which includes stops in Sarajevo, Dubrovnik and ports along the Dalmatian coast. Boris Sdjdar will serve as tour leader. The cruise ends in Venice and includes a study day at the Venice Biennale, led by Ken Oshima. Read More.
     

  SAH Announces Architecture Tours for Annual Conference in Austin
SAH has announced the slate of tours for its 2014 Annual Conference that takes place April 9-13, in Austin, Texas. The tours are an important part of the conference, which brings art and architectural historians, city planners, preservationists, architects and others from around the world together to share the latest research on the built environment. The tours give conference attendees and the interested public the opportunity to learn about the city’s architectural heritage from local experts and, as part of the conference’s public programming, help SAH meet its objective of engaging with the host city while addressing pertinent issues.   250 New Entries Added to SAH Archipedia
The number of building histories in SAH Archipedia and SAH Archipedia Classic Buildings expanded in November to include 250 new entries as well as 1,500 verified semantic metadata tags across numerous entries. Thanks in part to this work by the editorial and technical teams at SAH and University of Virginia Press, all entries from Buildings of Virginia: Tidewater and Piedmont, a print volume in the Buildings of the United States series, are now available online in SAH Archipedia.   JSAH December 2013 Issue Now Available
SAH is pleased to announce the release of the current issue of the Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians: Vol. 72, No. 4, December 2013. SAH members can access full articles by logging into the SAH website and clicking on the link on the JSAH page.

Call for Nominations to the JSAH Editorial Advisory Committee
SAH invites nominations and self-nominations for eight individuals to serve on the JSAH Editorial Advisory Committee for staggered terms of one to four years (deadline January 2). Read More.
     
  Podcasting Architecture
This week marks the anniversary of Swann's Way, the first installment of Marcel Proust's In Search of Lost Time. Ira Glass, creator of This American Life, begins a marathon reading of the novel from a hotel room in Brooklyn. After constructing a replica of Proust's own room, Yale's French Department embarks on a similar marathon. With Proust, the modern self encountered a subjective re-awakening through architectural memory. Read More.
     

  The Seljuq and Ilkhanid Architecture of Medieval Persia

The medieval world was much more interconnected than our current understanding leads us to believe. Ambassadors, merchants, and travelers linked cities from England to India. My interests follow this path of cross-cultural influence between medieval construction techniques in Europe and Persia. I primarily focused my research on two periods: the Seljuq (12th century) and Ilkhanid (14th century) dynasties, trying to reach a few of the most remote sites in the northwest regions of Iran, the closest to the Mediterranean Sea and the Byzantine Empire.   Open Access to College Art Association Reviews Journal The College Art Association (CAA) and Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group will embark on a new publishing partnership beginning January 1, 2014. Taylor & Francis will publish and distribute CAA's The Art Bulletin and Art Journal and provide an open-access digital platform for CAA's reviews journal, caa.reviews. Read More.

The Latrobe Chapter Annual Meeting Fellowship helps a graduate student or emerging professional in architectural history, landscape history, urban studies or historic preservation in the Washington area attend the Annual Conference of the Society of Architectural Historians. The Philadelphia Chapter of SAH will be hosting a presentation of the new book, The Houses of Louis Kahn (Yale, 2013), co-authored by chapter president William Whitaker and Penn professor George H. Marcus. Whitaker is the curator of the Penn Architectural Archives. The event will be held on Thursday, December 12, 2013, at 6 p.m., at the Archives, 220 South 34th Street. The Philadelphia Chapter became an incorporated nonprofit organization (state and federal) earlier this year and is starting to make plans to celebrate its 50th anniversary in October 2014.

Art Libraries Society of North America (ARLIS/NA) will hold its annual conference in Washington, D.C., May 1-5, 2014. The conference theme is Art + Politics and will feature events at Dumbarton Oaks and the Library of Congress, as well as presentations by Susan Stamberg and James M. Goode. The Historians of Islamic Art Association (HIAA) is pleased to announce the election of new President-Elect Sussan Babaie and Secretary Abigail Balbale to the 2014–16 executive board. Both will be welcomed at our annual meeting on February 14, 2014, held in conjunction with the CAA conference in Chicago, when Sheila Canby will succeed Shreve Simpson as president. Preparations also continue for HIAA's Fourth Biennial Symposium at the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto.
 
Current SAH Opportunities 
HABS-SAH Sally Kress Tompkins Fellowship: A joint program of the Society of Architectural Historians (SAH) and the National Park Service's Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS), this fellowship permits an architectural historian to work on a 12-week HABS project during the summer of 2014. Deadline December 31.

Charles E. Peterson Fellowship: A joint program with the Athenaeum of Philadelphia, this fellowship supports the participation of a graduate student in the research and writing for a volume in the Buildings of the United States (BUS) series and/or SAH Archipedia, the Society’s online architectural resource. Deadline January 2.

Call for Session Proposals: SAH 68th Annual Conference in Chicago: The Society invites members and future members to chair a session at the 2015 SAH Annual Conference in Chicago, April 15-19. Deadline January 15.
