 | Recap of the SAH 67th Annual Conference in Austin, TX Nearly 600 SAH members participated in the Society’s 67th Annual Conference that took place in Austin, Texas, from April 9-13, 2014. The 2014 Annual Conference kicked off Wednesday with an opening reception at the Hyatt Regency Austin, followed by the SAH Annual Business Meeting that included the election of officers and board members.  | Buildings of Vermont Wins Preservation Award Glenn Andres and Curtis Johnson have received a Preservation Award from the Preservation Trust of Vermont for their work on the recently published Buildings of Vermont volume. The awards, presented at the Trust’s 20th Annual Historic Preservation & Downtown Conference on May 2, in Island Pond, Vermont, celebrate outstanding contributions in the field of historic preservation and recognize individuals and organizations that have been instrumental to the preservation of Vermont’s historic places. | |
 | Ann Baird Whiteside Wins Nancy DeLaurier Award from VRA The Visual Resources Association (VRA) presented the winners of the organization’s highest honors at a Membership and Awards Dinner on March 13, 2014, at the Visual Resources Association's 32nd annual conference, held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. VRA presented the Nancy DeLaurier Award for distinguished achievement in the field of visual resources to Ann Baird Whiteside of Harvard University. Whiteside was honored for her leadership in the development and implementation of the SAH's SAHARA Project. Read More | |
 | A Broken Silhouette SAH Blog post by Emily Neumeier On February 15th, Istanbul's new metro line officially went into service. The project, initiated by the Greater Istanbul Municipality in 2005, unites the city's various metro lines, extending trains in Taksim Square directly into the old city, with connections to Atatürk Airport and the opposite Anatolian shore. The revolutionary poet of modernism felt “a constant electrical breeze” in the great city, powering trains to the horizon and elevators to the stars, igniting the metropolitan elements; "the buildings are glowing with electricity,” he wrote. Luis M. Castañeda and Patricio del Real are co-chairing the SAH-sponsored session of the 2015 CAA Annual Conference, titled "Expanding the Modern Debate: Architects’ Writings in Latin America." | President Nominates William D. Adams as Chairman of the NEH A native of Birmingham, Michigan, Adams earned his undergraduate degree in philosophy at Colorado College and a Ph.D. from the University of California at Santa Cruz History of Consciousness Program. He studied in France as a Fulbright Scholar before beginning his career in higher education with appointments to teach political philosophy at Santa Clara University in California and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. | Chapter & Partner News The New England Chapter of SAH is pleased to announce that Sarah Rovang (Brown University) has been awarded the 2014 John Coolidge Research Fellowship. The chapter recently sponsored a teaching symposium on online teaching organized by Amanda Reeser Lawrence and Lucy Maulsby of Northeastern University. NESAH’s spring tour, organized by Milda Richardson, was an informative tour of the Historic Mill District in Lawrence MA. The Michael Heim Translation Prize will be awarded for the first time in 2014, and annually thereafter, for the best collegial translation of a journal article from an East European language into English. M&T Reviews targets projects, products, events and issues within the broad realm of multimedia and technology as they pertain to arts scholarship, research and librarianship. The first issue includes a review of SAH Archipedia by Barret Havens. The Construction History Society of America invites researchers and practitioners from all aspects of the history of construction to submit paper abstracts for the 5th International Congress on Construction History, to be held in Chicago, June 3-7, 2015. Mellon Foundation, this award is designed to provide financial relief to scholars who are publishing their first monograph on the history of the built environment and who are responsible for paying for rights and permissions for images in their publications.
