| | Save the Date: 2014 SAH Awards Gala, November 8 The 2014 SAH Awards Gala will be held on Saturday, November 8, at The Fortnightly of Chicago. The theme of the gala is "A Foundation for Preservation," honoring those individuals who initiated early preservation work in Chicago and continue to support and encourage preservation. SAH will present five Awards for Architectural Excellence in: Preservation Advocacy, Stewardship of the Built Environment, Architectural Conservation, Architectural Media and Conservation of the Natural Environment. | | City of Chicago and Graham Foundation to Partner with the Chicago Architecture Biennial
The largest international survey of contemporary architecture in North America will take place in Chicago in the fall of 2015. The event will include robust public programming and exhibitions featuring the world’s leading architectural talent and will be presented by the City of Chicago, the Graham Foundation, and the recently-formed Chicago Architecture Biennial. Since I am addressing a forum of intellectuals with a keen interest in history and culture, many of you might already know this fact. I might have heard it a time or two in life, only to forget, and then be reminded again in Mexico City. I am not ashamed to admit that. Why is this tidbit of information important to the history of architecture and urbanism in Mexico City, you ask? In June of 2013, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences released a report that is or should by now be well-known to many of you: “The Heart of the Matter: The Humanities and Social Sciences for a Vibrant, Competitive, and Secure Nation.” I attended “The Heart of the Matter” launch on June 19th at the Capital Building in Washington, DC, where the project’s leaders delivered brief declarations about the importance of the humanities for their own lives, and especially for the nation’s health. | | Buildings of Michigan Honored Congratulations to Kathryn Eckert, whose revised edition of Buildings of Michigan was selected by the Michigan Architectural Foundation as part of Rae Dumke Collection of 100 Essential Architecture Books. An opening reception highlighting the collection was held at the Baldwin Public Library in Birmingham, Michigan, on June 11, 2014; a video of the official comments can be viewed online. |

| | ACLS Announces the 2013-2014 Programs in China Studies Fellows and Grantees The American Council of Learned Societies announced the results of the 2013-2014 competitions of the Henry Luce Foundation/ACLS Program in China Studies and of the Comparative Perspectives on Chinese Culture and Society program, supported by the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange.
There were three competitions in the Henry Luce Foundation/ACLS Program in China Studies, offering predissertation-summer grants, postdoctoral fellowships, and collaborative reading-workshop grants. The competition for the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation program offered grants for planning meetings, workshops, and conferences. All combined, 31 fellowships and grants were awarded from over 190 applications. Read More |

Senate Confirms William D. Adams as Chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities The United States Senate voted on July 9 to confirm William D. “Bro” Adams as the 10th chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). Adams, president of Colby College in Waterville, Maine from 2000 until his retirement on June 30, 2014, is a committed advocate for liberal arts education and brings to the Endowment a long record of leadership in higher education and the humanities. Humanities Funding Still Below Pre-Recession Levels A new report by the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, The State of the Humanities: Funding 2014, indicates that funding for humanities research, education and programs in the U.S. is still below pre-recession levels. Read More |

August 1. CFP: Graduate Student Lightning Talks: SAH is accepting paper abstracts for the Graduate Student Lightning Talks session of the 68th Annual Conference in Chicago, April 15-19. Deadline August 1. 2015 SAH Award for Film and Video: This annual award recognizes the most distinguished work of film or video on the history of the built environment. Deadline August 1. 2015 SAH Publication Awards: Each year, SAH presents five awards honoring publications in architectural history, urban history, landscape history, preservation and exhibition catalogues. Deadline August 1. 2015 SAH International Travel Grants: Funded by a grant from the Getty Foundation, these grants are for scholars from countries that have traditionally been underrepresented at the SAH Annual Conference to attend the 2015 conference in Chicago. SAH membership is not required. Deadline September 1. SAH Membership Grants for Emerging Professionals: Funded by the Scott Opler Endowment for New Scholars, these grants provide a one-year membership in SAH to emerging scholars. Deadline September 12.
