 | SAH Announces 68th Annual International Conference in Chicago SAH will hold its 68th Annual International Conference in Chicago, Illinois, from April 15–19, 2015, with the theme Chicago at the Global Crossroads. SAH will celebrate its 75th anniversary during the conference, which includes lectures, roundtables, and 36 paper sessions covering topics in architecture, art and architectural history, preservation, landscape architecture, and the built environment.

 | SAH Receives Grant from Alphawood Foundation Chicago for Charnley-Persky House Restoration SAH has received a $5,000 grant from Alphawood Foundation Chicago to assist with flood repair work at the SAH headquarters, the Charnley-Persky House. The 1891-1892 landmark house, designed by Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright, suffered flood damage in August.

 | Become a Founding Member of Friends of Charnley-Persky House Join us as we launch a new campaign to support SAH headquarters, the National Historic Landmark Charnley-Persky House. Make a donation of any amount to CPH now through December 31, 2014, and become a Founding Member. Anyone who has made a contribution (since August 20) to the Cynthia and Ben Weese Challenge Grant to support restoration of CPH is considered a Founding Member.

 | The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Awards CAA and SAH a Grant to Develop Evaluation Guidelines for Digital Art and Architectural History The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has awarded the College Art Association (CAA) a $90,000 grant to partner with the Society for Architectural Historians (SAH) in the development of guidelines for the evaluation of digital scholarship in art and architectural history for promotion and tenure.

 | Lecture by David Schalliol, December 2 SAH is partnering with MAS Studio, a Chicago-based organization that addresses issues that affect the urban context, to present a lecture by David Schalliol, a PhD candidate in the University of Chicago’s Department of Sociology who explores the transformation of urban centers through hybrid ethnographic, filmic, and photographic projects. In his talk, titled “The Area,” David will discuss the documentary film he is currently developing that focuses on a portion of Englewood where 400 families are being displaced by the expansion of the Norfolk Southern South Side 47th Street Terminal.

I had not yet visited Kumasi, walked the campus of KNUST, or seen the Asante traditional buildings that survived British destruction in 1874. I truncated my trip due to the pressures of the health epidemic in West Africa (although no cases of Ebola were reported in Ghana), and left a month to the day that I arrived.

| Hernst Herzfeld Papers from The Metropolitan Museum's Department of Islamic Art The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Department of Islamic Art and Thomas J. Watson Library are excited to announce the release of a new online resource. Researchers can now view select documents from the department’s collection of Papers from the Archive of Ernst Herzfeld, a leading scholar of Near Eastern Studies in the early twentieth century, online. These materials are made available through the Metropolitan Museum of Art Libraries’ Digital Collections page. The first series of documents from the Islamic Department’s holdings to be released consists of architectural drawings and plans made of monuments in Syria, Iraq, Iran and Turkey. Learn More | |||
| Chapter and Partner News The Art Libraries Society of North America (ARLIS/NA) is accepting applications for the following research awards. The H. W. Wilson Foundation Research Award provides funds (up to $3,000) to be used in support of future and in-process research projects which contribute to and benefit art and visual resources librarianship, and librarianship in general. The Worldwide Books Award for Publications and the Worldwide Books Award for Electronic Resources bestow cash prizes (up to $2,000 each) for outstanding print and online art publications—a book, a website, an article, etc.—that have been published within the past two years, 2013 or 2014. The European Architectural History Network (EAHN) is accepting proposals for sessions and roundtables for its Fourth International Meeting in Dublin, Ireland, June 2-4, 2016. | Current SAH Opportunities HABS-SAH Sally Kress Tompkins Fellowship: This fellowship permits an architectural historian to work on a 12-week HABS project during the summer. Deadline December 31, 2014. Charles E. Peterson Fellowship of the Buildings of the United States and the Athenaeum of Philadelphia: This fellowship supports the participation of a graduate student in the research and writing for a volume in the Buildings of the United States series and/or SAH Archipedia. Deadline January 2, 2015. Call for Nominations to JSAH Editorial Advisory Committee: SAH invites nominations and self-nominations for two individuals to serve on the Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians Editorial Advisory Committee for a term of four years starting April 15, 2015.
