 | SAH Announces Major Grant for Charnley-Persky House Conservation Management Plan SAH has received a $123,000 grant from the Alphawood Foundation to hire Harboe Architects to develop a conservation management plan for Charnley-Persky House. Designed by Adler and Sullivan in 1891–1892 when Frank Lloyd Wright was an apprentice in their office, Charnley-Persky House will celebrate the 125th anniversary of its design in 2016 with a new conservation management plan that will assess the current physical state of the structure, identify potential problem areas, and establish conservation priorities for the continued health of the building.

 | SAH Announces 2016 Fellows The Society of Architectural Historians will induct Barry Bergdoll, Diane Favro, Richard Longstreth and Therese O’Malley as SAH Fellows at its 2016 Annual International Conference in Pasadena. Fellows of the Society of Architectural Historians are those individuals who have distinguished themselves by a lifetime of significant contributions to the field of architectural history, which may include scholarship, service to SAH or stewardship of the built environment. The 2016 SAH Fellows, all past presidents of the Society, will be honored at an awards ceremony on April 7.

 | Call for Volunteers: SAH 2016 Pasadena/LA Conference Volunteer sign-up is now open for SAH's 2016 Annual International Conference. Every year, we have a number of dedicated and enthusiastic local volunteers who assist us in welcoming the 500+ conference participants. We have numerous opportunities for volunteering at the conference: assembling registration materials, manning the registration desk, assisting with one of 42 paper sessions, tour check-in, mid-day roundtables and our Saturday morning Los Angeles Seminar.

 | Vietnam & Cambodia Field Seminar Vietnam and Cambodia, countries with dynamic economies and young populations, possess a rich and wide-ranging architectural heritage. This SAH Field Seminar (December 1-13, 2016) will explore the fascinating architectural landscape of Vietnam, focusing in particular on the modern era from the nineteenth century to today. In addition, participants will visit the spectacular Angkor complex in Cambodia, capital of the Khmer empire from the ninth to fifteenth century. Registration opens on Thursday, February 25, at 3 pm CST.

The rise of the British Empire during the Georgian era is amply documented in SAHARA, which has thorough coverage of colonial-era buildings from North America to Africa and Australia.

Allen Brooks Travelling Fellow In the first of two blogs that I plan to write about Istanbul, a main topic will be Ottoman architecture in the city and current restoration projects. In a city with currently about 15 million inhabitants, expanding highway and public transportation systems, ongoing construction for a third bridge across the Bosporus, and a new airport near the Black Sea, monument preservation is a constant, pressing issue.

Mellon Fellowship for 2016 for current Ph.D. students or recent post-doctoral researchers. | SAH Chapter and Partner News The Philadelphia Chapter announces our 2016 George B. Tatum Fellow, Erin Putalik, PhD. candidate in architecture at the University of Pennsylvania. Putalik's dissertation considers architectural experimentation with “new” construction materials in the US during the first half of the twentieth century. It is her contention that as a wide range of newly developed materials made their way into the construction market, experimental houses provided an ideal platform through which to test and promote new uses for new materials. Registration is currently open for the Construction History Society of America’s 5th Biennial, May 26-29, 2016, in Austin, TX. Abstracts on "Knowledge Exchange and Transference of Building Technology" and all construction history topics related to the Americas will be presented. CHSA welcomes keynotes Tom Peters (Switzerland) and Roberto Meli (Mexico) and offers participants tours on historic bridges, San Antonio churches and a walking tour of Austin. Register here. Docomomo US and Docomomo US/Michigan are pleased to announce registration is now open for the 2016 National Symposium Beyond Modernism? Moving the Recent Past Forward. The two-day symposium will look at the diverging design and theory of the late 1970 and early 1980s through examining its leading architects and designers and their iconic architectural contributions. Beyond Modernism seeks to broaden the discussion and expand our understanding of how those examples fit into the discourse of modernism. The Historians of Islamic Art Association (HIAA) congratulates its new executive board members: Marika Sardar (Treasurer), Nadia Kurd (Webmaster), Alex Dika Seggerman (Social Media Manager), Jenny Norton-Wright (News Editor), and Ünver Rüstem (Out-of-Country Representative).
