 | Season's Greetings As 2016 comes to a close, I would like to thank each of you for the many ways in which you support the Society and its programs. Thank you for your leadership, your financial support, for the many hours spent volunteering on numerous committees and programs, on study tours, annual conferences, publications, fellowship and awards selections, the list goes on. The work of SAH is a collective effort and your contributions are truly valued.

 | SAH 2017 Conference Program and Registration We are excited to announce that the program for the SAH 2017 Annual International Conference in Glasgow, Scotland (June 7-11), will be available online beginning December 20. Early registration will open at 3 pm CST on Tuesday, January 10. The Glasgow conference features a full program that includes 36 sessions, 8 roundtables, 33 tours, keynote talks and special events, the SAH Glasgow Seminar, and more. We hope you'll join us for our first conference outside of North America since 1973!

 | SAH 2018 Call for Sessions Closes Jan 17 SAH will offer a total of 36 paper sessions at its 2018 Annual International Conference in St. Paul, Minnesota. The Society invites its members, including graduate students and independent scholars, representatives of SAH chapters and partner organizations, to chair a session at the conference. The deadline to submit a session proposal is 5 pm CST on January 17, 2017.

 | SAH Archipedia Seeks Scholar Contributors SAH Archipedia is an authoritative online encyclopedia of the built world published jointly by SAH and the University of Virginia Press. For SAH Archipedia 3.0, we invite contributors to utilize this robust digital content and associated metadata to produce scholarship that will interpret the built environment of the United States—buildings, infrastructure, and landscapes—through thematic and place-based essays. Deadline January 31.

 | Highlights from SAHARA: Suburban Housing This month’s highlights from SAHARA includes 20th-century suburban housing from around the globe. Searching “suburb” in the collection returns hundreds of images from across the United States and well beyond. Look for Mark Hinchman’s views of Subang Jaya, in Malaysia, as well as Dell Upton’s view of a cul-de-sac surrounded by oil tanks in Signal Hill, California.

 | Edilia and François-Auguste de Montêquin Junior Fellowship Research Report By Savannah Esquivel My dissertation addresses architectural ornament in Mexico’s sixteenth-century mendicant monasteries. It is concerned specifically with a mode of illusionistic painting which is characterized by the simulation of architectural elements and the rendering of intricate geometric motifs in fresco and tempera murals. My dissertation research to date has been based in Mexico, where I have conducted on-site research at sixty monasteries.

As an architectural designer and historian studying the impact of tourism, Havana has been a complex, and at times confounding, classroom. In just the last thirty days, the length of a traditional tourist visa, record numbers of Americans have toured the capital, the first commercial flights from the United States landed in Havana since the two nations restored diplomatic relations after fifty-five years of silence, and the Cuban news stations extensively covered both an election that may impact renewed dialogues and the death of Fidel Castro.

| Make Charitable Giving Contributions Directly from Your IRA to Support SAH’s Buildings of the United States Project Individuals over the age of 70½ can make charitable gifts directly from Individual Retirement Accounts (IRA) and avoid the taxes on withdrawals. The change under the Qualified Charitable Distribution provision of the Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes Act of 2015 makes it easier for those over 70½ to plan their giving over the course of a year and to avoid paying taxes on required distributions from IRAs. HABS-SAH Sally Kress Tompkins Fellowship: Permits a graduate student in architectural history or a related field to work on a 12-week HABS history project during the summer of 2017. Deadline December 31. Latrobe Chapter Annual Conference Fellowship: Helps a graduate student or emerging professional in architectural history or a related field travel to and attend the SAH 2017 Annual International Conference in Glasgow, Scotland, June 7-11. Deadline January 1. Charles E. Peterson Fellowship of the Buildings of the United States and the Athenaeum of Philadelphia: Annual fellowship that supports the participation of a graduate student in the research and writing for a volume in the BUS series and/or SAH Archipedia. Call for Nominations to the JSAH Editorial Advisory Committee: SAH invites nominations and self-nominations for two individuals to serve on the Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians Editorial Advisory Committee for a term of four years starting April 15, 2017. | SAH Chapter and Partner News Registration is open for the Art Libraries Society of North America (ARLIS/NA) annual conference to take place February 5-9, 2017, in New Orleans, LA. Early Bird Registration lasts through December 23, 2016. Register at arlisna.org/neworleans2017. Registration is open for the Visual Resources Association's 34th Annual Conference, "Unbridled Opportunities" to be held in Louisville, KY, March 29-April 1, 2017. Society of Historians of Eastern European, Eurasian, and Russian Art and Architecture (SHERA) sponsored a panel at the 2016 ASEEES Annual Convention. During the SHERA Annual meeting, members discussed the upcoming conference in Venice, reelection of Board officers, Graduate Student Travel Grant, and the change of the communication platform. The SHERA-sponsored double-session that highlights the research of emerging scholars, and the membership meeting are scheduled at the 2017 CAA Annual Conference, February 15-18, NYC. | |||||||
