Deadline: April 30, 2019
SAH invites nominations and self-nominations for the next Editor of JSAH to serve a three-year term: January 1, 2021–December 31, 2022. In addition, the Editor is expected to serve as JSAH Editor Designate beginning January 2020.
The Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians, JSAH, is a quarterly, blind-peer reviewed international journal devoted to all aspects of the history of the global built environment and spatial practice, including architecture, landscape architecture, urbanism, and city planning. Published since 1941, JSAH has defined the field of architectural history, and is a pioneer in digital publication.
In 2021 SAH will celebrate the 80th year of the Journal’s publication. Articles published in JSAH are historically rigorous, conceptually sophisticated, and theoretically innovative. The JSAH Editor will be responsible for the content and focus of the journal, which is published simultaneously in print and electronic formats (JSAH online).
SAH seeks an Editor who will embrace a broad view of architectural history as described above. The Editor will review submitted manuscripts, secure blind peer reviews of submitted manuscripts, communicate decisions to authors, solicit content, and prepare material for four issues per year. The Editor is responsible for final decisions regarding content and focus of the journal; design is coordinated with staff at the University of California Press.
The Editor will supervise the JSAH Book, Exhibition, and Multimedia Review Editors, the JSAH Managing Editor, and a professional copy editor. The Editor will work with SAH staff, and with the production, marketing and technical staff at University of California Press, to ensure timely publication and to promote the journal.
From time to time the JSAH Editor also will curate selections of articles already published in the Journal to release as special online virtual issues through University of California Press. Past virtual issues of this type have commemorated World Architecture Day and architectural anniversaries of international importance.
The Editor will submit semi-annual written updates and attend SAH Executive Committee and Board meetings (April and November). Periodic meetings with the JSAH Editorial Advisory Committee, whose members advise and assist the Editor and serve as ambassadors for the JSAH, will take place by conference call and at the April SAH annual conference.
SAH will provide a $6,000 annual subvention for the JSAH Editor to hire an Editorial Assistant. If the Editor works at an academic institution, SAH encourages the Editor to seek course release, but SAH is not able to provide compensation for such release.
Candidates must be current SAH members and should not be serving as Editor of, or on the editorial board of, a competitive journal. With each nomination, please send a statement describing qualifications for appointment, a CV, and the name and full contact information of at least one reference to info@sah.org with “JSAH Editor Nomination” in the subject line.
For full consideration, please send nominations by April 30, 2019.
