The Getty Foundation and the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) announced today ten recipients of Getty/ACLS Postdoctoral Fellowships in the History of Art. This is the second year that the Getty Foundation and ACLS have awarded the fellowships, which encourage diverse, international perspectives. The program is administered by ACLS, a preeminent representative of American scholarship in the humanities and related social sciences. Among the ten recipients is SAH member
Alice Isabella Sullivan for her work on
Byzantium Reimagined in Moldavian Art and Architecture.
A major three-year Foundation grant to ACLS supports ten postdoctoral fellows each year who are selected by a distinguished committee of scholars. Each 12-month, non-residential fellowship includes a $60,000 stipend and an additional $5,000 for travel and research. Awardees will convene at the Getty for a week-long residency upon completion of their fellowships, creating a community of scholars connected to one another. The fellowships encourage projects that make substantial and original contributions to the understanding of art and its history, an endeavor that now includes both technical and digital art history. The first ten recipients were named in 2018.
ACLS, a private, nonprofit federation of 75 national scholarly organizations, is widely recognized for its administration of fellowship programs, offering over $25 million in fellowships and grants to support more than 350 scholars worldwide. These fellowships provide a range of opportunities for scholars in all fields of the humanities and at all career stages, from graduate students and distinguished professors to independent scholars.
Dr. Sullivan is a lecturer in the History of Art, University of Michigan-Ann Arbor and joined SAH in 2018. She was awarded an Opler Membership Grant for Emerging Professionals for 2019.
