SAH Announces New Change Agent Award

The Society of Architectural Historians is pleased to announce it will present its inaugural Change Agent Award in New York City on July 17, 2019. Like the SAH Awards for Architectural Excellence presented in Chicago each November, the Change Agent Award honors individuals in architecture, design, conservation and urbanism for their innovative, paradigm-shifting work.

The inaugural SAH Change Agent Award will be presented to the partners of the New York architecture firm Diller, Scofidio + Renfro: Elizabeth Diller, Ricardo Scofidio, Charles Renfro and Benjamin Gilmartin, at a reception at The Century Club in midtown Manhattan.

DS+R’s work involves an interdisciplinary approach to design that encompasses art, architecture, digital media, and large-scale planning, with a focus on cultural and civic projects. Their Manhattan work includes the creation of the High Line (in collaboration with James Corner Field Operations and Piet Oudolf), the redesign of Lincoln Center, the current renovation of the Museum of Modern Art, and the newly-opened Bloomberg Building, home of The Shed, a multi-disciplinary arts center that moves on rails and can be reconfigured from the base of the DS+R condominium and apartment tower at 15 Hudson Yards.

The award reception will include a short presentation about The Shed by Liz Diller followed by a conversation with the four firm partners and Martino Stierli, The Philip Johnson Chief Curator of Architecture and Design at The Museum of Modern Art.

Proceeds from the Award Reception support SAH in implementing educational programming, developing print and online resources, and carrying out its mission to promote the study, interpretation, and conservation of architecture, design, landscapes, and urbanism worldwide for the benefit of all. Proceeds also will benefit the ongoing restoration of SAH’s national landmark headquarters Charnley-Perksy House in Chicago (1891–1892, designed by Adler and Sullivan with Frank Lloyd Wright).
