Three UVA School of Architecture alumnae, Victoria M. Young (UVA, MArH and PhD), Ann C. Huppert (UVA, MArH and PhD) and Thaisa Way (UVA, MArH) recently helped to bring together over 1,000 participants for the Society of Architectural Historians 2020 Virtual Conference held on April 30 - May 1.
The annual conference, chaired this year by Victoria Young, Professor and Chair of Art History at the University of St. Thomas and SAH's current President, serves as one of the most important events for architectural historians and scholars. As as a result of this year's conference being held virtually, SAH saw increased participation and was able to expand their platform by sharing many of the speakers' talks online for a month.
Serving as the conference's local co-chairs, Ann C. Huppert is an Associate Professor at the University of Washington, and Thaisa Way is a Professor at the University of Washington and the Resident Program Director for Garden and Landscape Studies at Dumbarton Oaks.
The University of Virginia's architectural history community was also represented at the conference by Marie A. Frank (UVA, PhD), Associate Professor at the University of Massachusetts, Lowell, who presented her research on Fiske Kimball; Christine Madrid French (UVA, MArH), Director Development for the California Preservation Foundation, who hosted a conference webinar; Bryan Clark Green (UVA, MArH and PhD) of Commonwealth Architects in Richmond, the session chair for Preserving the Postmodern Past; and Mabel O. Wilson (UVA, BSArch), Nancy and George Rupp Professor of Architecture, Planning and Preservation at Columbia University — Wilson was the 2020 Eduard F. Selker Keynote Speaker, presenting "Home of the Oppressed": Democracy, Slavery and Civic Architecture.
