Southeast Chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians (SESAH)
The Southeast Chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians (SESAH) is pleased to announce the release of volume 30 (2019) of Arris, its peer-reviewed print journal. Arris publishes original scholarship on all aspects of the history of architecture and landscape, with a particular interest in interrogations of the American South.
Arris 30 opens with an “In Memoriam” of architectural historian Michael Fazio (1943-2020), followed by his essay, “My Strange Encounter with Basic Design,” looking back on his modernist architectural education at Auburn. Fazio was professor at Mississippi State University and long-time member of SESAH and SAH. Next are three articles:
In “Croxton at Kings Mountain: Implementation and Elaboration of the National Park Service Aesthetic,” Carter Hudgins, Amalia Leifeste, and Brittany Tulla investigate Joseph Croxton’s (1910-81) designs at two parks in South Carolina, which adapted National Park Service models to local conditions and at the same time conformed to the period’s segregationist policies.
In “Waluhaje: A Haven unto Its Own,” Martha Teall examines the Atlanta apartment hotel built in 1952 by African-American contractor Walter Aiken (1893-1965). Accommodating black travelers and locals as well as a providing community gathering space, the building became the locus of civil rights activism, including Aiken’s, at a time when Jim Crow laws began to be challenged.
In “The Forgotten Modernism of James Williams Oglesby III,” Mason Toms reconstructs the career of this overlooked Arkansan architect (1922-2009) and demonstrates the basis of his houses in Wright’s concept of organic architecture.
Arris 30 concludes with reviews of three university press books.
The editors welcome submissions on a rolling basis for future issues of Arris in the form of research articles, field notes, and book reviews (see CFP).
Society of Architectural Historians Australia & New Zealand (SAHANZ)
SAHANZ annually offers The David Saunders Founder’s Grant in memory of the founder of the Society, to support research by emerging researchers in the disciplines of architectural history and theory. Applications can be made to apply for funds to assist in field-work, archival assistance, printing and reproduction costs in preparation for publication. The award cannot be used to fund conference travel or registration. The Grant amount is AUD $3000. The deadline for 2020 applications is 26 June 2020. Visual Resources Association (VRA)
The VRA’s 2021 Annual Conference will be held in Chicago, IL from Tuesday, March 23th through Friday, March 26th, 2021 at the Westin, Michigan Avenue. We are exploring hybrid (in-person and online) conference options, so please consider ways you could present materials to both physical and virtual audiences.
Presenting at the VRA Conference provides you with the opportunity to see how your ideas, research, work, and passion connect to those of other dedicated professionals while building networks and friendships in an open, collaborative environment.
All proposals are welcome, and if you have other conference ideas or suggestions that do not fit the conference proposal form, please reach out to the Vice President for Conference Program, Sara Schumacher at vpcp@vraweb.org.
The deadline for submissions is Monday, July 27, 2020. Program submissions received after this date will not be considered for the 2021 conference.
