Thank you to everyone who contributed to support the SAH #Giving Tuesday campaign to establish the SAH IDEAS Research Fellowship. With your support, we raised $5,695, meeting the challenge offered by an SAH board member to match all gifts dollar-to-dollar up to $5,000.
With this $10,695 SAH will offer research fellowships aimed at increasing the representation of emerging scholars and graduate students of color in architectural history and expand research in topics such as race, gender, social and economic justice, inclusion, disability, and climate change, as they may intersect with the study of built environments, interiors, landscapes, and urbanism.
The SAH IDEAS Research Fellowships will grant recipients $1,000 each to assist with travel and accommodations to conduct research (when travel is possible), and fees and associated costs of research activities.
The SAH IDEAS Research Fellowships further the goal of SAH’s recently formed IDEAS Initiative (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Accountability and Sustainability), to examine its status quo and implement activities for meaningful and sustainable change in all areas including membership, programs, publications, fellowships, awards, opportunities, advocacy, outreach, and every aspect of SAH’s work. The Fellowships are an extension of the work being done by SAH’s new Affiliate Groups—particularly the SAH Minority Scholars Affiliate Group, the SAH Race and Architectural History Affiliate Group, and the SAH Asian American & Diasporic Architectural History Affiliate Group—to encourage and promote the untapped potential of young scholars of color.
SAH will further support Fellowship recipients’ research by providing opportunities to publish their work in SAH resources such as SAH Archipedia, the SAHARA image archive, SAH Commons, the SAH Blog, and JSAH Field Notes and Findings. SAH is committed to sustaining the IDEAS Research Fellowships on a permanent basis with annual funding to support the fellowship.
The SAH IDEAS Research Fellowship application guidelines and selection process will follow the process and timelines of other SAH fellowships. The first fellowships will be awarded in spring 2021.
