Dear SAH members,
We write with exciting news about the 2021 SAH Annual International Conference, which was to take place in Montréal: due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it will now be held as a virtual event. In light of the circumstances, we have rescheduled our in-person conference at the Hotel Bonaventure Montréal, the conference venue and hotel, for April 2023. We look forward to meeting you in Montréal that year!
Planning is now underway for the 2021 virtual conference. A record-setting 1,001 people joined us for our first-ever virtual conference last spring, many for the first time. We anticipate broad participation this year as we come together to share new scholarship on the history of the built environment and engage in thought-provoking conversations.
In addition to the conference sessions in April, we will hold virtual roundtables, workshops, meetings, and informational programs during the month of May. These events will include roundtables that promote scholarship on groups that have been marginalized in architectural history, that explore methods and approaches that challenge the dominant narrative, and that look critically at issues related to equity and inclusion in our field. We will announce the virtual roundtables in the coming month.
We would like to express our deep gratitude to the local co-chairs of the Montréal conference, Annmarie Adams and Martin Bressani, both of McGill University, for their efforts in organizing programs, tours, and receptions. We regret that we won’t have the opportunity to explore Montréal together in person this April, but we hope to build on their efforts in planning the 2023 conference.
The 2021 virtual conference registration fees will be $75–$100 for SAH members and $150 for non-members. (Session chairs and speakers who have pre-registered will be refunded the conference registration price difference.) Registration for roundtables will be free for everyone. By keeping the virtual conference registration fees low and presenting many programs free of charge, the conference will be more accessible, particularly for those who have been unable to travel to the conference due to family obligations, insufficient funding, and other restrictions.
We will announce the 2021 virtual conference schedule later in January, and registration will open on Tuesday, February 2.
