The Society of Architectural Historians (SAH) invites nominations and self-nominations for a new position of Associate Editor of the Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians (JSAH). The Associate Editor will serve a two-year term: January 1, 2022–December 31, 2023. Following this appointment, the Associate Editor will serve as JSAH Editor for a two-year term beginning on January 1, 2024, until December 31, 2025.
The Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians is a quarterly, blind-peer reviewed international journal devoted to all aspects of the history of the global built environment and spatial practice, including architecture, landscape architecture, urbanism, and city planning. Published since 1941, JSAH has defined the field of architectural history, and is a pioneer in digital publication. Articles published in JSAH are historically rigorous, conceptually sophisticated, and theoretically innovative. The JSAH Editor and JSAH Associate Editor work closely as a team, and together are responsible for the content and focus of the journal, which is published simultaneously in print and digital formats (JSAH Online).
SAH seeks a JSAH Associate Editor who will embrace a broad view of architectural history as described above. Candidates should be scholars of the history of the built environment with stature in the field and experience in editing book and/or exhibition reviews; institutional affiliation is not required. Candidates should be published authors of at least one peer-reviewed book.
The JSAH Associate Editor will assist the Editor in reviewing submitted manuscripts, securing blind peer reviews of submitted manuscripts, communicating decisions to authors, solicit content, and preparing material for four issues per year. The Editor is responsible for final decisions regarding content and focus of the journal; design and production are coordinated with staff at the University of California Press.
The JSAH Associate Editor will assist the Editor in supervising the JSAH Book, Exhibition, and Multimedia Review Editors, the JSAH Managing Editor, and a professional copy editor. The JSAH Associate Editor will assist the Editor in working with SAH staff, and with the production, marketing and technical staff at University of California Press, to ensure timely quarterly publication and to promote the journal.
From time to time the JSAH Editor and JSAH Associate Editor also will curate selections of articles already published in the Journal to release a special online virtual issues through the University of California Press. Past virtual issues of this type have commemorated World Architecture Day and architectural anniversaries of international importance.
The JSAH Editor and JSAH Associate Editor will submit semi-annual written updates and attend SAH Executive Committee and Board meetings (April, summer, and November). Periodic meetings with the JSAH Editorial Advisory Committee, whose eight members advise and assist the Editor and Associate Editor and serve as ambassadors for the JSAH, will take place by conference call and at the SAH annual conference in April.
The work of the JSAH Editor and Associate Editor represents a very significant time commitment. If the JSAH Associate Editor works at an academic institution, SAH encourages the Associate Editor to seek a course release, but the SAH is not able to provide compensation for such a release.
Candidates must be current SAH members and should not be serving as Editor of, or on the editorial board of, a competitive journal. SAH seeks applications from colleagues who will contribute to the diversity of perspectives on the JSAH Editorial Board and who will engage actively with conversations about the discipline’s engagements with differences of culture, religion, nationality, race, gender, sexuality, and access. Nominators should ascertain their nominee’s willingness to serve before submitting a name; self-nominations are also welcome.
Required Application Materials:
With each nomination, please send a 500-word statement describing qualifications for appointment, a CV, and the name and full contact information of at least one reference through the SAH Online Portal.
For full consideration, please upload nominations by August 31, 2021, through the SAH Online Portal.
Selection of the JSAH Associate Editor will be made by a committee appointed by the SAH President of selected past editors from all aspects of the journal and editorial advisory committee members. Candidates will be notified by October 10, 2021, and will be invited to attend the November Executive Committee and Board meetings as their term begins January 1, 2022.
