The Fireplace Project in East Hampton, New York, is a contemporary art gallery, located in the former Talmage garage at 851 Springs Fireplace Road, in the Springs historic district across from the Pollock-Krasner house.
The Fireplace Project features solo exhibitions, curated group exhibitions, and artists’ projects. They are a project space and therefore non-traditional in their approach. They do not represent artists, they present artists. It is directed by Edsel Williams.
The Fireplace Project will present a solo exhibition of architecture, sculpture, and ephemera by Hans Noë. An essay by Lawrence Weschler will be published with the exhibition.
Hans Noë was born in Czernowitz in 1928. He studied painting in Romania and Germany before coming to New York in 1949. He started Cooper Union in 1951, where he studied with Tony Smith, who interested him in architecture and hired him as a draftsman. Afterwards he did construction work for Tony Smith on a house in Long Island for Theodoros Stamos. After military service in the Army during the Korean War, he studied architecture full time at Illinois Institute of Technology with Mies van der Rohe and Ludwig Hilbersheimer. He then returned to NY, got married, and started his practice. He also worked in sculpture, but this work has never been exhibited.
Some of the works in this show, both architecture and sculpture, are models or experiments. Regardless of size, or medium, a family of ideas about scale, aspect, and containment organize
Noë' s work, as well as a strong commitment to the value of seeing and feeling sculptures and spaces, and the awareness of the difficulty of doing so. This show presents a great deal of work in different media.
