In honor of Black History Month, two new thematic essays and related entries have been published on SAH Archipedia. In The Making and Unmaking of the Nation’s Northernmost Black Community, Ian Hartman examines the Fairview neighborhood in Anchorage, from its growth during the Great Migration to urban renewal efforts in the 1960s that destroyed the neighborhood’s historic and cultural fabric. In her essay, African American Architectural Heritage in the Capital, Vyta Pivo explores the legacy of D.C.’s Black population, including Black architects and designers as well as the enslaved workers who built some of our nation’s most iconic structures. Hartman and Pivo illustrate their essays with numerous related building entries that allow readers to explore these cities in greater detail.
