Deadline: April 1, 2022
The Society of Architectural Historians (SAH) invites nominations and self-nominations for membership on the Editorial Advisory Committee of the SAH Archipedia/Buildings of the United States (BUS) publication
program. Committee members will serve an initial two-year term, beginning upon appointment.
SAH Archipedia/BUS is an award-winning peer-reviewed publication program of the Society of Architectural Historians and the University of Virginia Press. Our project was established as a book series more than four decades ago and launched as a web-based
publication in 2012; in 2019, SAH Archipedia was redesigned for open-access featuring original born-digital scholarship and content from BUS print volumes, which we continue to publish. At present, our publications are devoted to all aspects of the history of the built environment and spatial practice in the United States, including architecture, landscape
architecture, urbanism, and city planning. As we look to the future, we are envisioning a robust program of digital and print publications that will grow to include global content.
SAH seeks Editorial Advisory Committee members who embrace
a broad view of architectural history as described above. Candidates should be scholars of the history of the built environment with established or emerging stature in the field and experience in editing and peer review; institutional affiliation
is not required. Candidates should be published authors of at least one peer-reviewed article or book (print or digital).
SAH seeks to create a culture where candidates from all backgrounds and identities feel welcome and can thrive. We encourage candidates from underrepresented and marginalized groups to apply and self-identify in their application materials. SAH seeks
applications from colleagues who will contribute to the diversity of perspectives and to conversations about the discipline’s engagements with differences of culture, religion, nationality, race, gender, sexuality, and access.
Nominators should ascertain their nominee’s willingness to serve before submitting a name; self-nominations are also welcome.
Required Application Materials:
With each nomination, please send the nominee’s name and full contact information, a 500-word statement describing qualifications for appointment, a CV, and the name and full contact information of at least one reference through the SAH Online Portal.
For full consideration, please upload nominations by April 1st, 2022, through the SAH Online Portal. Candidates will be notified by May 31, 2022.
Candidates will be reviewed by the SAH Archipedia/BUS Editorial Advisory Committee and the selected members are expected to start editorial and peer review work upon appointment.
This is a volunteer position. Although no remuneration is involved, the committee member’s name, institution, and contact information will be published on the SAH Archipedia website and the SAH Archipedia/BUS page of the SAH website. Because SAH
Archipedia/BUS is a well-respected peer review publication, service on the Editorial Advisory Board should be eligible for building a promotion and tenure case.
The responsibilities of SAH Archipedia/BUS Editorial Advisory Committee members include assisting the Editor in Chief and Managing Editor in the production of the joint publishing program. These duties include (but are not limited to): review
scholarly content, edit scholarly content, assist in acquisition and editing of visual media, advise on editorial policies and scope of content, attract new authors and submissions, identify area experts to serve as external peer reviewers,
and promote SAH Archipedia/BUS both inside and outside the Society. Committee members peer review proposals for new content (digital and print) and work within the SAH Archipedia content management system (CMS) to peer review and
edit thematic and/or place-based essays, individual and linked entries and associated metadata, manuscripts for print volumes, and any other content in the publishing queue. Members attend at least one meeting each year, in
person during the SAH Annual Conference or via web-based video conference; other virtual meetings are scheduled as needed
The time commitment for Editorial Advisory Board members is estimated to be 5 hours per week, on average. Committee members are eligible for reappointment to a second two-year term.
