The Society of Architectural Historians has appointed Thomas Leslie, FAIA as the Book Review Editor of the Americas for the Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians (JSAH). Leslie will serve a three-year term, from January 1, 2023, to December 31, 2025. In this role he will be responsible for commissioning and editing reviews of books that focus on architecture in the Americas—North, South, and Caribbean, ancient to modern—and that are appropriate for coverage in JSAH.
Leslie is the Morrill Professor in Architecture in the Department of Architecture at Iowa State University. He has published widely on the historic integration of building science and technology, and has written on issues of urbanism, labor history, building legislation, and the political and social impact of large-scale construction. His articles have appeared in academic and professional journals including JSAH, Construction History, Association for Preservation Technology Journal, The Journal of Architectural Education, and The Journal of Architecture. Leslie is the co-editor of Pier Luigi Nervi: Aesthetics and Technology in Building: The Twenty-First Century Edition (co-edited with Elisabetta Margiotta Nervi and Cristiana Chiorino, University of Illinois Press, 2018), and the author of Beauty’s Rigor: Patterns of Production in the Work of Pier Luigi Nervi (University of Illinois Press, 2017), Design-Tech: Building Science for Architects (with Jason Alread and Robert Whitehead, Routledge, 2014), and Chicago Skyscrapers, 1871-1934 (University of Illinois Press, 2013). His current book project, Chicago Skyscrapers: 1934–1986 incorporates issues of civic representation, the (literal) encoding of political and racial fault lines in the city, and the role of public housing in re-shaping the city during the Daley administration.
Currently, Leslie serves on the Editorial Advisory Boards of TAD, Journal of Construction History, and Journal of Illinois History, and on the Editorial Board of Memoirs of the American Academy in Rome.
Leslie is now accepting books for reviews that will be published in 2023. For information on how to submit a book for review, please visit the JSAH page.
