Purpose
The SAH Annual Conference Student Diversity Fellowships are designed to introduce students from historically underrepresented groups to architectural history as an independent area of expertise, a desirable and viable career option, mentor them as they explore their interest, and engage them in the work of SAH. The Fellowships are administered by the Minority Scholars, Asian American & Diasporic Architectural History, and Race & Architectural History Affiliate Groups.
The Award
The awards include registration to the SAH Annual International Conference, mentorship at the conference, and a one-year digital membership to SAH that includes access to JSAH, various digital resources, grants and funding opportunities, and other member benefits.
Fellowship Requirements
In addition to attending the SAH 2023 Annual International Conference in Montréal, Canada (April 12–16), recipients will be required to participate in an informal virtual gathering with affiliate group members at the beginning and end of the conference. Recipients are expected to communicate with their affiliate group mentor (assigned ahead of time) and to accompany their mentor to conference sessions and other events, as appropriate. Recipients will receive a list of recommended sessions to attend. Fellowship recipients will provide a 250-word, post-conference reflection of their experience.
Criteria for Application
Undergraduate applicants must be currently enrolled in an accredited college or university, and may come from any course of study, so long as they have participated in at least one prior architectural history course.
Graduate students must be currently enrolled in a master’s program in any design discipline with an interest in architectural history. Current PhD candidates are not eligible.
Applicants should self-identify as members of groups who have been underrepresented in the field of architectural history. We particularly welcome applications from BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) students from universities across the Americas and those who study at designated minority-serving institutions (including Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Hispanic-Serving Institutions, Tribal Colleges and Universities, and Asian American and Pacific Islander Serving Institutions). We also encourage applications from people with disabilities as we acknowledge the challenges they face when participating in conferences.

Applicants must submit the following through the online portal:
- Personal statement (500 words max) should address the following two items:
- How you self-identify as a member of an underrepresented group in the field of architectural history
- Reflections on your experience studying architectural history or related coursework and thoughts about how architectural history might help us think differently about issues of equity and social justice
- Evidence of interest in architectural history signaled through successful completion of at least one course in architectural history (as recorded on an unofficial or official transcript).
Two recipients will be selected by a committee consisting of members of the Minority Scholars, Asian American & Diasporic Architectural History, and Race & Architectural History Affiliate Groups. The application deadline is January 31, 2023.
