The Society of Architectural Historians seeks an associate editor for SAHARA, its digital archive of images of the global built environment. This is a volunteer position.
SAHARA has been growing and evolving since 2010 and is unique in its model of member-contributed images and metadata. It currently has over 200,000 images in its Members Collection. This is an exciting time for the project as it migrates from the Artstor platform to JSTOR, where images will be available alongside articles and other print materials. The migration is expected to be complete in early 2024.
SAHARA currently has two co-editors; in a new structure, the associate editor will serve alongside the two co-editors for 6–12 months, then step into the role of co-editor. At that time, a new associate editor will be recruited to ensure the overlap of incoming and outgoing editors and to provide adequate training.
Candidates should be familiar with SAHARA and have a strong background in architectural history, photography standards, metadata/cataloging practices, and ideally have worked with JSTOR Forum or a similar content management platform. Duties include editing the backlog of SAHARA entries, soliciting contributions and assisting new contributors, and communicating with ITHAKA/JSTOR support staff. The successful candidate will also participate in the SAH Digital Advisory Committee, which works toward SAH publication interoperability. The candidate should also be willing to promote the project through monthly SAHARA Highlights features and other avenues, and assist with grant writing when necessary.
Interested candidates should submit a statement about their qualifications and interest, along with a current CV, using this form by June 8, 2023, 5:00 pm Central Time. If you have questions, please contact SAH Executive Director Ben Thomas at bthomas@sah.org.
