On October 20, Ginger Nolan, assistant professor at the School of Architecture at the University of Southern California and inaugural recipient of the SAH | Places Prize, presented the SAH | Places Prize Lecture at the Graham Foundation in Chicago and via live-stream. Her talk, "Black Capitalism and the City: African American Insurance and the Actuarial Double-Bind,” explored how African American-owned insurance companies negotiated the (often vexed) aims of pursuing financial gain while also trying to create more equitable cities. Charles L. Davis II, an associate professor of architectural history and criticism at the University of Texas at Austin and chair of the SAH Race + Architectural History Affiliate Group, moderated the Q&A discussion.
