2022 SALVE REGINA UNIVERSITY CULTURAL AND HISTORIC PRESERVATION CONFERENCE NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND (OCTOBER 13-15) CELEBRATING 75 YEARS OF PRESERVATION AT SALVE REGINA UNIVERSITY
Seventy-Five years ago, the Sisters of Mercy were gifted the turn of the century mansion, Ochre Court, as the base for founding a college. In the time since the university has grown to encompass 78 acres of historic grounds and structures. Today Salve Regina stands as a monument to that early work of preserving these historic structures to be enjoyed by students and the community. But preservation is not a static event, it is a constant process demanding adaptability. The future will require more of preservation practitioners who must grapple with rapid technological developments, social upheaval, and the need to expand interpretations to tell more diverse stories.
To both honor the legacy of the preservation movement as well as look to the future, we invite papers, which address one of the following themes:
• The future of preservation with a special preference for talks, which address issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
• Research studies, which make a significant contribution to the fields of cultural and historic preservation.
This year we are pleased to welcome submissions to our Salve student paper symposium. Graduate and undergraduate students are encouraged to submit abstracts to present their original or collaborative research.
Papers in any field of academic or applied preservation (e.g. architecture, architectural history, archaeology, museum studies, preservation planning/policy) and public history are welcome. We have extended the deadline for individual and session proposals to April 15, 2022. The Call for Papers is now open and conference registration will open soon at:
Morrison Heckscher, former Chairman of the American Wing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, will be the Richard A. Grills Keynote Speaker in Historic Preservation, Jesse Casana, an archaeologist at Dartmouth College, and Carl Lounsbury, who was the Senior Architectural Historian at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, will be two of the featured speakers.
