Join us as we explore the Golden 1 Center (AECOM, 2017), the world’s most technologically advanced and sustainable arena, and the first LEED Platinum Arena in the world. Golden 1 Center received the 2017 American Architecture Award for the best new building designed by American architects presented by the Chicago Athenaeum and an AIA Central Valley Chapter, Regional Recognition Award the same year. SAH/SCC Advisory Board member, Life Member and Designer for the project, Rob Rothblatt, will take us through the design process, history, and evolution of the project leading to an influential shift in design.
Golden 1 was the first indoor-outdoor arena in the NBA. The building’s hangar doors open to the outdoors, connecting with the community and the prevailing breezes that can cool the Arena. Spaces like the popular “million trees” balcony hover half in and half out, and the building interacts with the city as the façade bends in and out.
“The building has a muscular athleticism,” says Rothblatt, “and it is important that civic buildings have some sense of gravitas.”
Since its construction, the design of sports facilities has taken a decidedly indoor-outdoor turn. Both Banc of California Stadium and the new SoFi stadium in Los Angeles have exploited their location’s climate and the modern predilection for blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces.
