The current show at CAB Studio, Architecture of Reparations by Riff Studio, asks the public through an RFP open call to share new ideas for restorative housing. The goal of the RFP is not to prescribe a solution to the question of “What form should Reparations take?” Instead, the RFP is meant to add to the list of what form Reparations could take in the neighborhood of Bronzeville in Chicago. Riff Studio launched the RFP open call in 2021 and initially received over 30 submissions that explored considerations of how vacant, abandoned, underutilized or unexpected spaces can be reimagined into spaces for people to live, work, study, and rest. As curator Michelle Joan Wilkinson reflected in the RFP introduction, “The invited designers acknowledge the violence of neglect, of police brutality, of being unhoused—real-life contexts in which some of their proposals exist. But their ideas are also full of the creative energy of Bronzeville and black communities elsewhere where people negotiate and structure space with what is at hand.” To read the complete forward by Michelle Wilkinson and submissions received, click here
