Invitation to Join a Working Committee of HIG, the Historic Interiors Affiliate Group of the Society of Architectural Historians
Established in 2020, the Historic Interiors Group (HIG) is dedicated to the study of historic interiors. Its mission is to gather people together to foster scholarly inquiry on the history of the interior within and beyond the SAH, supporting teachers, researchers, curators, archivists, librarians, publishers, and practitioners.
HIG is pleased to invite members to apply to join one of our established working committees and help advance our goals.

Description of the mission, goals, expectations, and application instructions for each group follow below. Committee membership is generally expected to be a two-year commitment, with the option to renew for a second term. We will be accepting applications through September 29, 2023.
Communications Committee Mission
The mission of the Communications Committee is to promote the work and events of HIG in a timely manner to increase engagement, membership, and event attendance among members and non-members.
Goals
The committee maintains the following platforms to facilitate HIG membership and participation in activities: SAH-HIG WordPress site, SAH Commons group site, Announcements in SAH Opportunities, and email direct mailings to HIG members.
Responsibilities involve obtaining information on HIG activities from HIG Committees and organizers in a timely manner so as to plan and achieve a successful communications strategy.
Expectations
New members will attend potentially quarterly meetings (likely virtual), to review the list of HIG activities and assign contributions to communications efforts. Most non-meeting committee contact will happen through email. Estimated time commitment is 2 hours per month. Familiarity with social media platforms and/or WordPress, SAH Commons would be an asset.

Emerging Scholars Committee Mission
The mission of the Emerging Scholars Committee is to foster exchange among and showcase the work of Emerging Scholars in the field of historic interiors broadly defined, encompassing current graduate students and early-career professionals within 5 years of completion of a terminal degree.
Goals
This committee primarily serves the interests of graduate students and recent graduates interested in the research, interpretation, and analysis of historic interior spaces. There is a lot of opportunity to explore various research topics, platforms for exchange and networking. For three years running, this committee has planned, organized, and hosted a virtual Annual New Research Symposium in Late Spring/early Summer, featuring research from a broad selection of international Emerging Scholars and professionals. Other events include a workshop or panel on a topic related to academic support in the history of interiors and related fields, e.g. grant writing, research outputs, to take place in the fall.
Expectations
New members will be expected to assist with the Committee’s two annual events, to attend regular meetings, and to contribute to continued outreach and internal development. There is an opportunity to serve as liaison to the Executive Committee, as well, and represent the committee within the larger Historic Interiors Group Affiliate group.

Events & Conferences Committee Mission
The mission of the Events & Conferences Committee is to support scholarly exchange in the field of historic interiors and to help build community across disciplines and time zones by organizing regular events.
Goals
The Committee regularly organizes book talks, visits to interiors (often coinciding with major conferences such as CAA and SAH), and endorses a session about interiors at the Society of Architectural Historians annual meeting.
The Committee seeks members who can envision virtual and in-person events that will introduce new subject matter concerning interiors to HIG members, looking especially beyond Europe and North America. We particularly welcome new members who can help build relationships with other organizations to facilitate collaborative events, building on our successful recent collaboration with the William Morris Society in the United States.
Expectations
We anticipate gathering for virtual Events Committee meetings 3–4 times a year; most business will be conducted by email. Members will work together to plan HIG events and share responsibility for representing the Events Committee at HIG Executive Committee meetings. Total time commitment is approximately 2 hours per month.

Pedagogy Committee Mission
The mission of the Pedagogy Committee is to provide a forum for discussion about teaching the history of interiors, as well as to document, support, and advance pedagogy initiatives in the field.
Goals
This committee primarily serves the needs of educators who teach the history of interiors. Our core aims are to foster community and provide resources. Last year the committee initiated an Education Roundtable virtual event series to explore best practices and new ideas for the teaching of History of Interior courses. This event grew from the committee’s ongoing work to complete an audit of syllabi, to discover what is being taught, where, and by whom in History of Interiors courses. Goals for 2023-24 will be to host another Education Roundtable event, to summarize results from our curriculum audit, and to explore other ways of serving the needs of history of interior instructors.
Expectations
We anticipate gathering 3-4 times a year for virtual Pedagogy Committee meetings. New members will work with other committee members in reaching out to those who teach history of interior courses, analyze results from survey, prepare prose summary of results for Society of Architectural History members. New members will also be invited to assist with organizing the (virtual) Education Roundtable and developing this session into a more formal SAH Connects session or Conference event that foregrounds the teaching of the history of interiors. Total time commitment is approximately 2-3 hours per month.

Research Committee Mission
The mission of the Research Committee is to document, support, and advance research initiatives in the interdisciplinary field of historic interiors.
Goals
Current goals of the HIG Research Committee are to survey, support, and promote current research related to the history of interiors and to develop a public resource documenting relevant archival and research collections in the field.
Expectations
We ask that new members be prepared to: contribute to one or more of our Research Committee projects/goals; participate in shaping our direction and goals going forward; and attend our regular (monthly) online committee meetings as well as the HIG Executive Committee meetings (on a rotating basis).
