The SAH | Places Prize is a unique collaboration between the Society of Architectural Historians and Places Journal that supports innovative public scholarship on race, architecture, and the built environment. The prize aims to expand the contemporary discussion on race and the built environment through the production of a significant work of public scholarship to be published in Places and presented as a lecture by SAH. The SAH | Places Prize was envisioned by Charles L. Davis II, an associate professor of architectural history and criticism at the University of Texas at Austin and co-founder of the SAH Race + Architectural History Affiliate Group.

Architectural historian Ginger Nolan is the recipient of the 2023 SAH | Places Prize. On October 20, 2023, she delivered the SAH | Places Prize Lecture, "Black Capitalism and the City: African American Insurance and the Actuarial Double-Bind," at the Graham Foundation. On October 20, Ginger Nolan, assistant professor at the School of Architecture at the University of Southern California and inaugural recipient of the SAH | Places Prize, presented the SAH | Places Prize Lecture at the Graham Foundation in Chicago and via live-stream. Her talk, "Black Capitalism and the City: African American Insurance and the Actuarial Double-Bind,” explored how African American-owned insurance companies negotiated the (often vexed) aims of pursuing financial gain while also trying to create more equitable cities. Charles L. Davis II, an associate professor of architectural history and criticism at the University of Texas at Austin and chair of the SAH Race + Architectural History Affiliate Group, moderated the Q&A discussion. We are pleased to present a video of the lecture and discussion and thank Places Journal the Graham Foundation for their partnership.
